52 for 52 - A challenge? Maybe. Lets make it better.
I am now in week 10 of my 52 for 52 challenge, and I think I might expand it a little. I had the idea of launching this challenge to become a better operator myself, but I want to develop it further in case others want to give it a try later on. If I decide to continue beyond just the concept, I might create a website and maybe a newsletter/email list, or a forum or Discord server. I'm not sure, and since I am so new to this whole thing, I don't know if I
52 for 52: A Year‑Long Amateur Radio Operating Challenge
52 for 52 is a year‑long operating challenge designed to help amateur radio operators stay active, build confidence, and develop real operating skill through consistent on‑air practice. The concept is simple and powerful:
Make 52 contacts every week for all 52 weeks of the year.
By maintaining steady activity, operators naturally improve their technique, expand their knowledge, and explore new aspects of the hobby. Whether you’re brand‑new or a seasoned ham, the challenge turns regular operating into a structured, rewarding adventure.
How It Works
- Each week, participants aim to complete 52 valid two‑way contacts*.
- Any band or mode is allowed on licensed amateur frequency: HF, VHF/UHF, digital, CW, SSB, FM, satellites, repeaters, and more.
- Contacts must be made within the calendar week (Monday–Sunday).
- Extra contacts do not roll over to future weeks.
- Each contact counts once; duplicate QSOs with the same station on the same band/mode on the same UTC day do not count.
- Logging can be done on paper, in a spreadsheet, or with any logging software.
* A valid contact consists of callsign, signal reports (sent and received), and confirmation; however, contacts made on repeaters will be considered valid if you get at least a callsign and note the repeater name and/or frequency, but it is encouraged to focus contacts on traditional two-way communication, and minimize the use of repeaters.
Weekly Themes (Optional but fun)
To keep things fresh, each week includes an optional challenge theme that encourages operators to try something new. Themes might include:
- Activate a POTA park
- Participate in a fox hunt
- Make a satellite contact
- Try a new digital mode
- Operate QRP
- Check into a new net
- Build or test a new antenna
- Make a contact through a repeater you’ve never used
These themes add variety and help operators explore the full range of amateur radio. The point is to get operators to try something new.
Why Participate?
The 52 for 52 challenge is built around one idea: consistent practice makes better operators.
By staying active on the air, participants will:
- Improve your operating speed and confidence
- Learn new modes and techniques
- Build stronger situational awareness
- Discover new bands, tools, and communities
- Stay connected with the hobby all year long
It’s not about perfection, it’s about progress, exploration, and having fun.
Recognition & Achievement
Eventually, participants would be able to earn badges or awards for milestones such as:
- Participating for 13, 26, 39, or all 52 weeks
- Completing 52 contacts for 13, 26, 39, or all 52 weeks
Eventually, I would love to have additional awards and badges like the following:
- Finishing all weekly themes (not sure on this one)
- Making notable specialty contacts (POTA, satellites, QRP, etc.)
These achievements help track progress and celebrate dedication. At the moment, they are all self-tracked and self-certified. A downloadable certificate will be available for anyone who completes the challenge. With the ability to earn an award for a minimum of 13 weeks, you can participate, even starting toward the end of September. It might be fun to have a "wall of winners" or something similar, where we can post the callsigns of past years' winners, similar to the list put out for DXCC.
Join the Adventure
Whether you’re looking to sharpen your skills, explore new parts of the hobby, or simply stay active on the air, 52 for 52 gives you a clear, motivating path through an entire year of amateur radio.
Turn every week into a new challenge and every contact into a step forward.
